I have two virtual private servers that run several MySQL databases, yet no one can reach them externally—not even a basic telnet on port 3306. I need somebody to jump in, locate the bottleneck, and open things up so remote clients can connect with full administrative privileges.
You will get SSH access to both VPS instances plus the root credentials for MySQL. I’m unsure whether any firewall (iptables/ufw/cloud panel) is blocking the port, or if the issue sits in my.cnf’s bind-address or a host-based restriction. Whatever the culprit, I just want it resolved quickly and cleanly.
Acceptance criteria:
• From any trusted external IP we agree on, a telnet to each server on 3306 succeeds and the MySQL client can log in using the admin user I provide.
• Existing databases and users stay intact—no accidental drops or permission changes.
• A concise note of the steps you took (firewall rules, my.cnf edits, service restarts, etc.) so I can replicate the fix later.
That’s it. If you know your way around Linux networking, MySQL config, and firewall management, this should be a straightforward task.
