Yoko Co: Front-End WordPress Developer

Headquarters: McLean, VA

URL: https://www.yokoco.com/

We’re seeking a Front-End Developer who wants to make the world a better place through clean code, thoughtful craftsmanship, and a genuine love of building great websites.

This isn’t just about turning designs into code, it’s about translating ideas into experiences, solving problems along the way, and taking pride in the details that make a site feel right. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys the craft of front-end development, cares about doing things the right way, and is always looking for a better, more efficient way to build.

Why work at Yoko Co?

- Do good, better: We exclusively serve clients who make a positive impact on the world. This is your chance to build things that help create a better place for all of us.

- 4-day flex week and lots of holidays. Mondays are flex days, meaning you’re free to take them off if you’re caught up on your work. Plus, we’re closed for nearly a full week at Thanksgiving (November), and two weeks at the end of the year, plus a bunch of other days, too.

- High performance, no jerks. You’ll collaborate with good people who believe in doing great work. Best Place to Work (and that’s not just our opinion).

- We’ve been named a Best Place to Work by the Inc. 5000 and Washington Business Journal. We value team members who are motivated by our mission and driven to make a positive impact.

If you have a passion for excellence, a growth mindset, and a commitment to collaboration, we’d love to hear from you.

What you’ll do:

As part of our development team, you’ll build websites and features from design references, turning Figma files into clean, maintainable, production-ready code. Our primary stack is built on Gutenberg block themes, so you’ll spend most of your time there, though you may also work on traditional WordPress themes and, occasionally, other page builders.

- Build websites and site features from design references, using industry-standard code and best practices

- Develop and maintain WordPress block themes using Gutenberg, templates, parts, patterns, and theme.json configuration

- Work with traditional WordPress themes when needed, and occasionally with other page builder platforms

- Write clean, well-structured HTML, CSS, and JavaScript

- Build or extend front-end functionality using React or similar component-based approaches when the project calls for it

- Use Git and GitHub for version control, following team branching and code review conventions

- Work within a continuous deployment workflow, ensuring changes move smoothly and safely from development to production

- Troubleshoot cross-browser and cross-device issues to ensure consistent, polished results

- Collaborate with designers, project managers, and strategists to bring projects to life

- Look for new and more efficient ways to deliver our work, whether that’s through better tooling, reusable components, or refined processes

- Contribute to internal documentation, component libraries, and knowledge sharing

- Stay current with WordPress, Gutenberg, and front-end development trends and best practices

What we’re looking for:

We’re less concerned with rigid checklists and more interested in capable, thoughtful developers who care about quality and enjoy solving problems.  Strong candidates typically have:

- Fluency in WordPress, with experience building both traditional themes and Gutenberg block themes

- Comfort working with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript Experience translating design references (Figma or similar) into accurate, responsive, production-ready code

- Familiarity with Git workflows and collaborative development practices

- Experience working within a continuous deployment or CI/CD pipeline

- Experience working with tools like Claude Code, Copilot, or Codex

- An eye for detail and a commitment to clean, maintainable code Excellent written and verbal communication skills

- Fluent English for written and spoken communication

- Bonus points:

- Experience building custom Gutenberg blocks

- Experience with React or similar component-based frameworks

- Experience working in a multi-client or agency environment

You may not want to apply if…

- You prefer 100% concrete specs handed to you with no ambiguity and no changes. We do our best to provide final, locked designs and specs, but things inevitably change as a project progresses

- You’re not interested in learning or working within Gutenberg block themes

- You’d rather work solo than collaborate with designers, PMs, and strategists

- You’re reluctant to incorporate AI into your workflow

Front-end development here is a mix of code and configuration, and often requires curiosity, flexibility, and a willingness to find the most efficient path to a great result.

What you get:

You’ll get a flexible schedule, unlimited time off, a competitive salary, a profit share bonus (starting in your second year), the ability to work wherever you want, a personal development budget, and all US federal holidays and multiple weeks off at the end of the year to recharge. We’ll also offset your entire carbon footprint. If you’re in the US, we also offer health insurance, disability and life insurance, and 401(k) matching.

More about us:

We’re a group of people who are passionate about the work we do, the clients we serve, and improving our craft. We also care about each other — we don’t think of one another as coworkers or employees, but as fellow humans. From developers to designers, project managers to strategists, we bring out the best in each other.

We’ve been in business for over a decade, our whole team is remote, and we’ve been named a Best Place to Work by the Inc. 5000 and the Washington Business Journal.

To apply:

If you’re interested, fill out our application form. An actual human from our team looks at every submission. As much as we’d like to, we can’t promise that we’ll reply to every application.

P.S. We encourage you to include a video message!
